Biotech centre to combat diseases

first_img8 April 2008The Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research (CPGR), the first of its kind in South Africa, has opened at the University of Cape Town’s medical campus, giving local researchers a powerful new tool for combating a variety of diseases. The centre is currently engaged in researching a new and improved molecular diagnostic marker of diseases such as malaria, leukemia and colorectal cancer, is conducting a search for markers of pathogen resistance in maize, as well as assessing of the possible health risks associated with the development of genetically modified plants, among others. The centre combines an integrated technological approach with a strong focus on translating information-rich discoveries into practical applications.“You should understand our excitement as we finally launch this cross-cutting facility, which will now take a pride of place in our national system of innovation,” said Science and Technology Minister Mosibudi Mangena, who officially opened the centre last week.Mangena said the centre would provide advanced biological solutions and project support to the country’s scientific community, as well as high-quality analytical services to academia and industry. The centre is to be a proactive driver of research and development in Southern Africa, aimed at directly boosting the biotechnology sector through building competitive research and development infrastructure.Mangena pointed out that the centre was of crucial importance to both the national biotechnology strategy and individual scientists’ who conduct research at the same level as their international peers. The technology platforms also provide positive benefits for the economy by encouraging plant and human biotechnology advances, and it is believed that the centre will empower researchers in the life science sector to convert scientific findings into practical applications.“We also trust that the CPGR will develop mechanisms to communicate the concept of genomics and proteomics effectively, to engage the public in an informed dialogue,” he said. “We believe this will, in turn, stimulate economic growth in the life sciences and biotechnology sectors.”Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

The Anti-SMS: Kik Texting App Adds Image/Video Sharing

first_imgA Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Kik’s appeal is easy to see. The messenger is simple by design, accessible on every platform imaginable (even BlackBerry, how kind!) and user handles aren’t linked to a phone number. According to Livingston, Kik is the perfect unifier. While SMS alternatives like iMessage are platform specific (no iOS or OS X? no iMessage), Kik is universal and not linked to anything like an Apple ID. Just pick a handle, hand it out and Kik somebody. It’s All Free – For NowSo far, Kik really isn’t all about the Benjamins. With $8 million in funding tucked away, Livingston declines to litter ads throughout the app, and dismisses premium models as arbitrarily holding features hostage to turn a buck. “We make zero dollars of revenue today,” says Livingston, who explains that the newly multimedia-rich Cards could also be Kik’s ticket to profitability – though that bit hasn’t quite been hammered out yet. One of the most interesting things about the messaging app, is that Kik has actually crept onto other social platforms. A search for #kik on Instagram yields more than 4 million results, and that’s just the tip of the hashtag iceberg. Hybrid Instagram/Kiksters – most of them teens posing for their front-facing cameras – generously sprinkle tags like #kikme #kikback and even #kikmeimbored into their photo posts, inviting adds on the messaging platform. Joining Kik, I thought my 20-something cohort might be better represented among those 30 million users, but Livingston remains my only friend on the app. It’ll be interesting to see where Kik’s enthusiastic, duck-faced users steer the social chat app next.  New Kinds Of Content To SwapOn Thursday, Kik expanded the kind of content users can share on the service. Up till now, the service was just a method of texting without incurring SMS charges. With the update, Kik now lets its massive user base send three new types of content – but that’s just the pilot set. Kik founder Ted Livingston envisions the app as a platform for instantly sharing content – any kind of content – plain and simple. In a Skype interview, Livingston’s casual enthusiasm for his product belied both his precocity (he is 24) and his earnest commitment to maintaining the general, shall we say awesomeness, of his product. “We haven’t really added any user-facing feature since South by Southwest 2011. And the reason why is like, we looked at our app; for us, this is exactly what we want. We want it to be very clean, we want it to be simple, we want it to be this very raw messenger.”Keep It Simple, KikLivingston insisted on developing the new release at a snail’s pace to keep from wrecking the service’s essential simplicity. The update handles this dilemma cleverly, offering two branching paths: keep using Kik as is, or swipe to the left and access the new feature set.The new Kik launches with Image Search, YouTube and Sketch, a Draw Something-esque option that lets users swap digital doodles. The app conjures the new content offerings as “Cards,” designed to slide to the fore and be hidden just as easily. Kik’s Cards are built entirely in HTML5 and woven into Kik’s existing native mobile platforms. The result is a surprisingly smooth kind of optional upgrade, so users loyal to text-exclusive Kik can ignore the new stuff altogether.  “If you just want the core experience, it stays exactly the same,” Livingston says. “We watched like a lot of other apps add all these features and try to innovate, just to rip out all the features 18 months later – and sort of alienate their user base along the way.  Tags:#apps#HTML5#Messaging Services#social media#social networks taylor hatmaker Hey, wanna Kik me?No?Well, I wasn’t aware that Kik had been verbified either – but it’s no surprise. The dead-simple messaging app is nothing short of a runaway hit among the text-crazed, sociallysavvy younger set. And with SMS text messaging on the decline for the first time ever, non-SMS alternatives like Kik are soaring. To put that in perspective, over the last few months, Kik has added 100,000 new users – per day. Kik is now 30 million Kiksters strong – with no signs of slowing down.center_img Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro…last_img read more

14 Valuable Questions About Your Last Decade

first_imgIt’s time to start thinking about 2020. It will be here before you know it, and you are going to need to start thinking about what you want to accomplish during your next trip on a tiny, nondescript rock circling a giant, burning ball of gas in an unlikely corner of the universe. But before you get started thinking about the next year, know that is no regular year-end. It is also the end of a decade, which means in addition to taking stock of your last year, you also need to look at your balance sheet for your last decade. We tend to overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can do in a week. You can extend this idea by recognizing how much you can do in a year, an amount of work that is dwarfed by what you can accomplish in a decade. Because we are often possessed by a distorted sense of time, we don’t tend to make long-term goals or plans to accomplish them.Your Balance SheetA financial balance sheet contains an accounting of your assets, which you can consider the things you accomplished over some time, like a year, or in this case, a decade. It also measures your liabilities, those things that you are responsible for, something you still owe someone. Your obligations for our purposes here will be the results you should have created but didn’t.The perspective provided by a single year is helpful, but the accounting of a year is inadequate when you look at your more substantial, longer-term goals and dreams. While the last year might have been spectacular, what did the other nine years look like? What is your trajectory?Your AssetsWhat did you accomplish over the last decade? In what ways did you grow and develop over the last ten years? What were the critical outcomes you created?Which of your goals did you reach? What were your personal successes? What were your business successes? How did the last decade prepare and position you for the next ten years?Your LiabilitiesWhat should you have accomplished over the last decade that went unaccomplished? In what areas should you have grown and improved but still require work? How does this unaddressed liability still impact your results? What are the critical outcomes that went undone during the last decade? What goals do you need to carry into the next decade because you didn’t accomplish them in the last? What were your personal failures, and what did they teach you? What were your business failures, and what did you learn from them? What results do you need to create in the next decade to catch up?The perspective of a decade is much more revealing than the perspective of a year. Thinking in longer terms raises the stakes on how you feel about what is possible for you. It changes how you think about your goals and your plans. By taking stock of your last decade, you will prime your mind to start planning the next decade. If you are brave enough to draft your balance sheet for the year 2030, you will gain greater clarity on what you want—and what you are going to have to do to bring that balance sheet to fruition. There are a few weeks left this year for you to reflect on the last decade, what you accomplished, and what was left undone. Remember that you can do less in a shorter period than you believe, but you can also do much, much more over a longer-term than you believe possible. Essential Reading! The SEC Made A Ridiculous Amount Of Money In 2014

first_imgSEC Logo in blue background.SEC Logo MoneyLife is good down south – down in the SEC, specifically. According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, the SEC made $455 million in 2014, a probable record for revenue among college football conferences. It’s a massive jump in revenue from 2013, when the league made $314.5 million, second that year to the Big Ten, which made $318 million. The conference can thank its new TV network, the SEC Network, for most of the big jump in revenue. That means each school gets a nice $31.07 million gift. SEC will distribute $31.07M per school in revenue, sources told @ESPN. Juventus expected Cristiano Ronaldo in low form

first_imgInside information from the Juventus camp talks about the real reason behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s lack of goals during his first ever Serie A season.Yes, it’s already been three matches with Cristiano Ronaldo not scoring any goals on his first ever Serie A season playing for Juventus. But there is a whole reasoning behind all that logic that we all have been wondering about and maybe some of you readers have already figured out by now, the Portuguese forward has a whole plan in motion that will allow him to become an even more important footballer in football history, if that’s even possible… We can already trace the past seasons he’s been playing for Real Madrid in the last nine years to see what he’s been about in regards to his physical condition, there is no denying that Cristiano Ronaldo has gradually changed the way in which he prepares for every single season due to his advanced age for a well-established football player like himself. We tend to forget that under all those muscles and talent to play the beautiful sport, we have a normal human being who has just as many preoccupations as any other person would have.? Check out the full video of today’s ⚪️⚫️ training session only on #JuventusTV ➡️ https://t.co/7FXJsnqlm9#ForzaJuve pic.twitter.com/QNiVuOsldu— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) September 5, 2018Due to his legendary stature, we might think that Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t have that same aging process that any other athlete would manifest during his or her career but Ronaldo is flesh and bone just like everybody else. So as time has gone by for a top performance athlete like himself, Cristiano Ronaldo has understood that he needs to modify many of the physical care methods he used growing up as a professional in order to get a better efficiency of every performance. As time went by at Real Madrid, everybody started noticing how Cristiano Ronaldo suddenly stopped doing the same dribbles as he did when he was younger and how his speed diminished in time. The Cristiano Ronaldo we knew during his years as a Red Devils were passed behind him and the man understood that perfectly, he knew that in order to stay in the elite he would have to start looking at new methods that would need to modify many of his traditions as a high-performance athlete.⚽️?? @Cristiano | https://t.co/G9LhZJLa6u ? #CR7JUVE #ForzaJuve pic.twitter.com/1BOTCVXTva— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) September 8, 2018Zidane’s influence on Ronaldo’s change of heart. At Real Madrid Ronaldo was able to understand that past his 30, he would have to prepare for the rest of the season un a different manner. Cristiano’s performance level difference started to manifest just a year before French manager Zinedine Zidane arrived as the manager of the club, as a proper football legend himself, ‘Zizou’ was able to get through to Ronaldo about his physical care routine and managed to get the very best out of him during his last three seasons at Real Madrid. At Juventus now as the most important transfer in the last decade, Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t produced the results people expect from him exactly but the Juventus staff knows exactly why this is. Turns out that there is a specific plan to get the very best of Cristiano Ronaldo during the most important stages of the season when the titles are in line. This pretty much exactly as the final years the Portuguese forward had at Real Madrid.Sergio Ramos, Real MadridZidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.? As the years have gone by for Cristiano, he has learned to control himself more given that he no longer has the same energy from the first days. He has considered that trying to get in shape from the very start of the season could eventually backfire and even carry some risks due to the whole fatigue probability and injury danger, would increase during the most decisive part of the season in spring. This is the main reason why he has modified his preparation plans for every season a little more lately.” said the source from inside Juventus.A recap of Thursday’s session at JTC ?⚪️⚫️?? https://t.co/aOiAKRp5X5?? https://t.co/HCfOFBrCRA #FinoAllaFine #ForzaJuve pic.twitter.com/OkwCkW09i7— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) September 6, 2018How long will Cristiano Ronaldo take to get to his best form in Serie A? Fletcher believes Pogba can be Uniteds matchwinner under Solksjaer

first_imgDarren Fletcher believes Paul Pogba can rediscover his best form at Manchester United following the departure of Jose Mourinho. The Stoke City midfielder believes Pogba remains “a match-winner” and has backed the midfielder to flourish if given a free role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former Juventus star has struggled to justify the £89 million price tag since the Red Devils paid for him in the summer of 2016. Part of the problem Pogba had was finding his role in Jose Mourinho’s system. Fletcher hopes that things would change for the 25-year-old now that Solskjaer has been appointed an interim manager for Manchester United.“When I was out ill I worked for six months with the reserves with Warren Joyce, and that’s what we did. We gave him a free role. We said to him, go and play, get on the ball and make things happen.” Fletcher told talkSPORT.“Obviously he worked hard as well, that was asked of him.”Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“But we didn’t play him as a central midfielder, somebody who was controlling the game, we played him higher up the pitch as a number ten, he could go left, he could go right.”“We let him be a free spirit and he was a match-winner.”“He could win games, he could create chances and he loved getting on the ball and trying things, but at least he was doing in the attacking third.”“So hopefully we see that Paul Pogba now, but he has got the ability of being a box-to-box midfielder, he’s matured now and I’ve seen him do it for France, so there’s no reason why he can’t do it for Man United.”last_img read more
